Linux Install

A few weeks ago I got my Shuttle XPC back.
It is a nice machine, a P4 3ghz, with 1 GB RAM and 160GB HD in a very small compact form.

I have decided to install Linux on it. The only question is what flavour?

I had narrowed it down to

    Ubuntu
A great Debian based distro with a wonderful user community and without the complexity of Debian itself.

   Red Hat
      Enterprise
      Fedora

The enterprise version of Red Hat has two things wrong with it.
1. It costs money!
There are a few clones of  the enterprise version of Red Hat, my favorite being CENTOS which lets you download the “offical” red hat updates for Free!. If I ever need to support Red Hat Enterprise this is what I will install.
But unfortunally it fails the second point.
2. Being an enterprise product it’s emphasis (rightly so) is stability
I am willing to trade stability for features, so that makes Fedora a better fit. Fedora is the testing bed for Red Hat Linux. Any features they like will get rolled over into the next version of the Enterprise product.

So after playing with Centos, Ubuntu 5.10, I have settled on (drum roll please ….)   FEDORA Core 4

Why?
1. Free
2. Cutting Edge
3. Based on the most popular corporate Linux.
This means that binaries for the latest versions of apps should be easy to get.
4. The user community is wonderful.

In Seoul

Wednesday 11 January 2006

Arrived in Seoul around 11am. Caught the 7am bus from Ulsan and slept most of the way.

Went to Yongsan Electronic market and purchased a Canon A620 digital camera for 400,000 won.
This includes a 1 GB SD memory card and a case.

Thursday, 12 January 2006

Went to Insadong and wandered around for a few hours. Found some nice items that I purchased for gifts for the family.

Friday, 13 January 2006?Ǭ†

Went to Itaewon. Had a subway sandwich for brunch and purchased some leather bags. Then went back to Seoul station and waited for the train home.

Bike Ride

Today, Tuesday the 10th, I went for a bike ride, 60 KMs

Since I haven’t ridden for a while my time was atrocious, 4h7m
I did my first 100km ride in that time! My excuse is I was sightseeing and I did ride up a mountain twice!
Then I drank some coke when I got back home and despite the fact I should feel very tired I am still wide awake at 4am.
So I will stay up all night, and catch the 6am bus to Seoul. Hopefully I will catch some sleep on the way there.

Around this time last year we had lots of snow here in Ulsan. Ulsan compared to Seoul is very warm. There are many years where there is very little or no snow. So for me last year was a great pleasure as I have seen snow less then 15 times in my entire life and all but one of those was in Korea!
