Convert PDF pages to JPEGs using R

I often get PDFs which have interesting images in them, but the problem is how to extract them?
This R Code will find every PDF in the current folder and covert each page to a 200 dpi JPEG

# Uses the fs library to list all files ending in PDF in the current directory and store them in file_list

file_list <- dir_ls(glob = "*.pdf")

# The eqivualent of a FOR loop, it iterates through each element of file_list and converts each PDF page to a 200dpi jpg using the pdftools library
lapply(file_list, FUN = function(files) {
  pdf_convert(files, format = "jpeg",dpi = 200)

The Handmaiden (2016)

Just finished watching the 2016 Korean film The Handmaiden.
It is a beautiful film to watch and the soundtrack is very well done, particularly: IMI ONEUN SORI (임이 오는 소리) The Sound Of You Coming

The Sound Of You Coming from The Handmaiden (2016) film

IMI ONEUN SORI (임이 오는 소리) The Sound Of You Coming

Like the sound of you coming
I hear something from somewhere
A sound that pinches my heart
(Minseo & Gain)
But you’re not coming, even when the night passes
My sad heart doesn’t know how to stop
Just waiting for the sound of you to come
Just waiting for the sound of you to come
(Minseo & Gain)
In my waiting heart
Joy overflows
You have found me, you’re coming over there
(Minseo & Gain)
Holding onto blue dreams, holding onto happiness
My heart that is waiting is blooming
Hurry and come, I’ve been waiting
Let’s dream a happy dream, just like long ago
(Minseo & Gain)
Holding onto blue dreams, holding onto happiness
My heart that is waiting is blooming
Just waiting for the sound of you to come
Just waiting for the sound of you to come

Purchased “The Art of Statistics” from Amazon for $30

Statistics has played a leading role in our scientific understanding of the world for centuries, yet we are all familiar with the way statistical claims can be sensationalised, particularly in the media. In the age of big data, as data science becomes established as a discipline, a basic grasp of statistical literacy is more important than ever.

In The Art of Statistics, David Spiegelhalter guides the reader through the essential principles we need in order to derive knowledge from data. Drawing on real world problems to introduce conceptual issues, he shows us how statistics can help us determine the luckiest passenger on the Titanic, whether serial killer Harold Shipman could have been caught earlier, and if screening for ovarian cancer is beneficial.

How many trees are there on the planet? Do busier hospitals have higher survival rates? Why do old men have big ears? Spiegelhalter reveals the answers to these and many other questions – questions that can only be addressed using statistical science.

Korean Drama

Netflix and Amazon Prime are serious impediments to productivity.

I watched Parasite a month or so ago. I really enjoyed it. One of the themes of the movie is social inequality and the lack of ability to move up in status / income.
It’s interesting that Korea’s income distribution is not too different to America’s.
But you always hear Americans talk about “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” whereas in Korean films this is not that common.

It does have Song Kang-ho in it as did 2017’s A Taxi Driver which I also liked. I will watch anything with Song Kang-Ho in it.

The Fiery Priest

It consisted of twenty 50 minute episodes. It is a typical Korean drama involving the heroes fighting corruption, but it is very slapstick.

They should have cut back on some of the slapstick because at times it became very annoying, but overall a Solid B, but not worth a repeat watch.

Ssongsak and Yo Han, two of my favourite characters

Priest Kim and Detective Goo

website is back up and running

I let the site lapse for a while because I couldn’t be bothered setting up a linux VM and making the effort to secure it properly.

So I was waiting for another special like I had with and my prayers were answered.

$1 for 12 Months of Australian Web Hosting @ VentraIP Australia

I am quite impressed with their user interface, I might actually stick with them at the end of the year.

I had to import all the old blog posts from a WordPress XML file. That was a quick process, until I realised:

  • a lot of the links were to instead of
  • A few hundred URLs were pointing to
    •   So had to changed to
  • So I had to manually search and replace the WordPress XML file (~36,800 lines), upload the file, notice another error and repeated the process until I was satisfied.

Total time: about 90 minutes.

Which is pretty good I think.
